The unique dangers of 18-wheelers

On Behalf of | Jun 16, 2023 | 18-Wheeler-Accidents

Every day, 18-wheelers transport goods across the country, making them an essential part of our economy. However, they also pose a significant risk to other drivers on the road.

These massive vehicles can weigh up to 80,000 pounds and have limited visibility, long stopping distances and difficulty maneuvering, which makes them a deadly threat to other motorists. Below we analyze why these vehicles are so dangerous.

Size and weight

18-wheelers are significantly larger and heavier than other vehicles on the road. In the event of an accident, the smaller vehicle is often no match for the size and weight of the truck.

Even a minor collision can lead to severe injuries or fatalities for the passengers in the smaller vehicle.

Limited visibility

Because of their size and shape, 18-wheelers have limited visibility compared to smaller vehicles. Large blind spots exist on the sides and rear of the truck, making it a challenge for the driver to see other cars. This can lead to accidents when the truck driver switches lanes or makes a turn.

Long stopping distance

18-wheelers require much longer space than smaller vehicles to come to a complete stop. The truck’s weight and speed contribute to the longer stopping distance, which can be dangerous in emergency situations. It may be impossible for a truck driver to avoid a collision if they do not have enough room to stop the vehicle.

18-wheelers pose a significant danger to other motorists on the road. Their size, limited visibility and long stopping distance make them a potentially deadly threat to other drivers, passengers and pedestrians.

To stay safe on the road, drivers of smaller vehicles should be aware of the dangers and give these vehicles plenty of space, avoid their blind spots and be mindful of their longer stopping distances. Trucking companies must also ensure they do everything they can to comply with safety regulations and train their drivers to minimize the risk of an accident.
