What is Xarelto?

Xarelto (rivaroxaban) is a prescription medicine that acts as an anticoagulant (blood thinner) to prevent the formation of blood clots. Xarelto is manufactured by Bayer Pharmaceuticals and marketed by Janssen Pharmaceuticals.

Xarelto is used to treat deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a type of blood clot that can occur after certain types of surgery. DVT can lead to blood clots in other areas, including the lungs.

Xarelto is also used to lower the risk of stroke from blood clots in people with atrial fibrillation.

Side effects of xarelto

More than 2,100 adverse events and over 150 deaths have been associated with Xarelto since it was approved in 2011. Serious side effects of Xarelto include:

  • Excessive and uncontrollable bleeding
  • Internal hemorrhaging
  • Brain bleeding
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Pulmonary embolism

Uncontrollable bleeding from Xarelto

The most serious side effect from Xarelto is uncontrolled bleeding, which can lead to hospitalization and can be fatal.

Xarelto has no antidote, so it can be difficult or impossible to stop the bleeding in some instances. Bayer and Janssen have yet to provide a method to stop the bleeding from Xarelto.

Xarelto has been linked to numerous hospitalizations and deaths due to severe bleeding.

Problems with Xarelto FDA studies

The approval process for Xarelto has been called into question after reviews of the clinical trial process found systemic errors. In fact, half of the clinical trial sites for Xarelto received the most severe rating from the FDA, indicating that the inspection identified objectionable conditions or practices significant enough to warrant regulatory action.
